Hussain the film guy.

I hired Hussian as I knew him through other friends at uni and I had discussed my screen test idea over summer with him. He is an extremely creative film student as well as being interesting and reliable. I hope that if I ever use videographers in my professional practice that they are of the same standard.
Hussain has suggested we use the following equipment:

Panasonic HMC41e Video Camera.
He will edit with Adobe Premiere.

We have both agreed that a single dedo light should be used for lighting, for its dramatic shadows and it is also very similar to lighting Warhol used.

Client Brief Final Proposal

Aims.

The aims of my client brief is to create a body of work that will be exhibited in 1-2 venues. This will be alongside two other photographers work so to create a theme to the exhibition as well as helping each other along the way. One of the exhibitions will be a evening event in a bar and the other will be a day event that will be for the public to view on a casual basis. Alongside this I will invite local media and attempt to contact magazines that are influential to my work, this will be The Gentle Woman and Super Super Magazine. I will contact these forms of media by telephone, email and post.
This will hopefully gain exposure for my work and the exhibition.
The piece of work I aim to achieve will play homage to Andy Warhol’s screen tests and photography style. I aim to hire a film student to film the screen tests and I will assist. I myself will photograph 10 models both female and male. All of this will be done in the studio.
Within the exhibition space I will create a living room aesthetic to display my work.
For promotion there will be flyers, posters and invitations created as well as using face book, a blog and creating a free website. This will be under the group brand name which will be called “ Crowd “.
The relevance of this project is the aim to sell myself as a photographer who doesn’t want to be mainstream with regards to fashion photography. I will have all the people I contact or use to help this project listed in a address book.

Procedures.

To gain the locations myself and the other 2 photographers will scout bars/pubs in the Preston area. This will be based on space, both floor and wall and how much it will cost to hire. We will also scout unused shops and contact the owners or estate agents to see if we can use these spaces. All of these places and the people we contact will be listed in the contacts book. Also all the venues will be photographed inside and out and these images will be posted on a blog. The blog will be created for all three photographers to access and post our joint findings but also individual posts regarding our work and development throughout.
Through an internet search media contacts will be acquired and contacted this will be once we have a date and venues. This will be initially done by email with a follow up telephone call the next day. I myself will be contacting relevant magazines, though I intend to do this once my body of work is complete. I will email and post examples of the piece and then follow up by telephoning the editors who will be from the magazines The Gentle woman and Super Super.
The body of work I will undertake will use both digital and film cameras in a studio location. I will also have a video camera that will be operated by a film student. This shoot will have 10 models attending in assigned slots. A group on face book will created for this shoot so that we all remain in contact. Out of the 10 models some will be known and others scouted by myself. As well as the face book site for my shoot, there will be another for the group for the exhibition. This will create a guest list.
For the venue I intend to purchase props so that I can create a living room scene I will go to charity shops and car boots to acquire this as I would like a kitsch/retro feel to my piece. I will need a television also so that the film footage can be played on a loop, I will seek advice from the film student with regards to my best options.
For promotion before the exhibition we as a group will design flyers, posters and invitations which will have our brand name on. The flyer will be placed in university buildings, shops and handed out on the day of the exhibition. Posters will also be put up when we have a dates and venues. The invitations will be made and posted to university departments and the contacts that we will have built up over the duration of the brief.
Throughout this project we as a group will have meetings and research how to put this exhibition together these will be held in study group rooms in the library. From this we will assign deadlines for each process that we undertake as a group and as individuals. Our time management and tasks undertaken will be mapped out on our blog, which will be the equivalent of a workbook. Also the exhibition blog and face book page will be updated when needed.

Proposal to Tutor

Below is the Proposal that I have had to send to my tutor, Ines Rae. It covers the aims which I wish to achieve within the project.

"Within assignment one I outlined that I wished to further my photographic practice after graduation by aiming to produce work for exhibitions which could then go on to be sold. Another aim is to produce work that stands out from crowd, and is individual and original; this can be done both through image content and through the methods of exhibition. Taking these ideas one step further into assignment two, I feel that it would be a perfect opportunity to set myself a brief to which I put together an exhibition of my work and promote it in such a way to attract members of the public, fellow students and individuals within the photographic industry. By choosing to do this, I will develop both my own personal photographic practice, along with the ability to build contacts.
Once I made the decision to aim towards an exhibition, I spoke to a couple of other students on the course and we chose to work towards a joint exhibition. We have come to the conclusion that we will produce our own projects and images for the exhibition, but by working towards a joint exhibition it will enable us to hopefully create a better overall exhibition space, and we will be able to attract a greater number of people. We must together to find locations that would offer an appropriate exhibition space, and once this is done and we have a set time and date, we must begin to produce flyers and posters and then send invitations to any contacts that we wish to attend the exhibition.
In terms of my own project for the exhibition, I would like to further on from what was said within assignment one; to produce an original set of images and possibly consider displaying them in an alternative manner other than simply mounting the images within a frame.
The subject matter of my project will be in within the genre of documentary / fine art, and I have selected to follow up an idea that I thought of last year; to photograph the colours and glow of the light pollution emitted from different cities around the country. I produced a test shot of this same idea last year of Manchester and I really liked the result. The image was rather abstract as it simply showed the sky, but in directly it is still a document of the city.
Therefore, for this brief I wish to produce images based upon this idea of several cities, each of which will produce a different looking abstract piece of documentary / art photography. I feel that once produced, and exhibited interestingly this could work out to be a perfect example of what it is I aim to work towards once graduated.
In regards to the costing of the project, I feel that there are aspects that I cannot give a cost to yet such as the exhibition method and materials as I would like to experiment with how to display the work. Therefore, it is impossible to state how much the exhibition materials would be if I do not know fully how I am going to exhibit the work. The costs of the room, flyers etc are stated below, however these prices would be split between the three of us.

Potential Costs (approx):

Room Hire for exhibition - £100
Flyers to promote exhibition - £16
Posters to promote exhibition - £20
Formal invitations for clients - £20
Snacks / Drinks for exhibition - £30"

Other Locations

The reason that I chose not to carry out this project when I first thought of it last year, was because I did not have any form of transport to get me to different locations to carry out the shoots. However, this year for this project my dad had agreed to take me around so I could document other cities.
The main criteria that i must consider when choosing other locations is their proximity to a raised area of land such as the Penines. This is because to achieve the best results I feel like the Manchester image, I must be looking over the area.
In an ideal world I would love to be able to travel across the full country documenting cities such as London and Birmingham etc, however I do not feel that this would be viable. Because of this I will have to focus upon cities in the North of the country. This is not a bad thing however as many of the major cities in the North are close to the Penines and therefore are ideally placed to be photographed from altitude.
The most viable cities that I could consider include Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Sheffield etc.

Change of film.

due to a severe lack of money and no access to any current art funds, i have had to change from using conventional film (costing £97 for 50 sheets) to using the same film i used for my last project, this being x-ray film, rated at 36 iso. so the quality is still going to be very fine indeed, it will just have very different contrast and tonal properties to conventional film. this film will record more shadow detail and will have a fairly high level of contrast as not many mid tones shall be recorded, but thankfully for this type of film, i shall be able to handle it and develop in under a red safety light, allowing me to have a very steady work flow. this i dont feel shall be much of a problem, as i have really liked this films properties, and is again different to most, if not all students. emphasising my works unique and distinct look.

Film fogging

There was minor miss hap when testing the film and camera. Because the camera I was using was new to me, and actually new, and had very little use, so all of the cogs and mechanisms where stiff, this lead to me fogging my film, as when loading the film holder into the back plate of the camera, I took great care to not break it and slid the film holder to the point at which I thought to be secure in the camera. This was in fact untrue, as it was needed to be clipped into place, so from this there was a minute gap (literally a millimetre or 2) where the ambient light could leak into the bellows and fog my film. But this was a simple mistake which I found out relatively early during the project, so this didn’t lead to any major dilemmas or disasters.

It is due to little errors like this from which I have learned so much, these areas often derive from my passion for the medium and analogue processes and so I rush into things with excitement and trip myself up from time to time, but in the long run it all helps and has lead me to where I am today.
