This blog represents an online workbook, showing the development and contacts for our individual projects and the group exhibition that will be the culmination of the brief.
We have chosen to create a facebook page, which for now will be rather vague like that of the flyers and posters. Purely as another method of spreading the word and building the interest.
Here are some flyer design I have done. After discussing the designs with Nathan and Lewis we all feel that the last 4 work the best and have a trail feel, so that the speculation will follow well. The flyers will be A5 size and photocopied to give a old school zine look. A list will follow of the places and locations where the flyers will be appearing. We will be using a different flyer for each week running up to the exhibition.
After scouring the internet again for various tilt and shift work i found the photographer behind the previous video i published on this blog. His name being Keith Loutit. and found this clip of the news about some of his work. and found these examples to be very inspirational.
The link above is for a page that has a selection of time lapse photography films that are interesting. some are more relivant to my idea than others, but still, they all show the possibilities of this method.
Display ideas.
After viewing several locations for a possible exhibition space I have encountered several locations where the space is very beautiful and attractive and one that would create a lovely atmosphere and a pleasant experience for our guest, but with a major problem with limited wall space, or with such space just the fact that the owners have stated that we are not able to drill into the wall so that we could potentially wall mount our work. So this has given me an added problem to try and solve. And an idea that I have thought of with the help of Moira and Nathan is that I could potentially still mount and frame my pieces of work, but in fact place the images on an artist’s easel. And from what I have been told these don’t come cheap, but what we have discussed and thought about is the possibility of using some of the universities, as surely the arts department have some to use, and also the fact that the show will only be open for a single night, I’m sure that this shouldn’t be a problem. This I will have to research further, as in whom to contact with such a request.
I have thought of the idea of combining some sort of moving image pieces to go alongside my still images; I have thought about the idea of experimenting with timelapse photography to document cities at night as it may create an interesting effect with the different lights. In doing such an idea I feel that it would link well with the still abstract images of the sky with the light glow. I have a piece of photography equipment that allows me to produce timelapse images as it is a timer that will trigger the camera once every set amount of time. by having this set up with the camera on a tripod, it will allow me to document in a different way. I will first research into other examples of this method of image making, and then try my own examples.
After typing this list I will start hunting for all these props by going to all the second hand shops in preston and the carboot that is on a Tuesday and Thursday.
As I gradually build up ideas with regards to my own interpretation of Andy Warhol's style of work and I combine this with the New Britannia Venue, my imagination for how I wish my exhibition to be displayed. The images below are how I would like to use my part of the room. i think that at the moment I really love the idea of having my images displayed in lots of different sized frames in a living room set up. Obviously if I succeed in completing a set of screen tests, a tv amongst this setup would look amazing.
For this project, I would really like to make my work stand out and be visually interesting, not just through the actual images themselves but also the way in which they are presented. I suggested this within Part 1 of Exercise 1 for PH3000, saying that I would like to start experimenting with the idea of exhibiting in the form of installation work. Having had this in mind, I instantly thought of the idea of using light boxes. I have always been a fan of their use within photography as I feel that they add an extra dimension to the images, giving them extra depth and added visual interest. I was first stuck by the appeal of light boxes when I visited an exhibition by Andrew Brooks in Urbis, Manchester. The exhibition was entitled "Hidden Manchester", and the images showed the likes of old bomb shelters that are deep beneath the centre Manchester. http://www.andrewbrooksphotography.com/view-main-gallery.php?id=31
The images are great in their own right, but I feel that when viewed on their light boxes they have a much bigger impact upon the viewer.
With this in mind, I feel that this is certainly an option as to how I would present my own imagery for this project. I feel that the work of Brooks works well on light boxes because they have alot of areas lit within the photographs, these areas are then highlighted due to being upon the lightboxes. Therefore, seeing as my own images are focused upon the light glow above cities, I feel that this method would be ideal.
When Myself and Lewis visited Manchester, we had a quick look in the Cornerhouse which is situated on Oxford Road. I already knew that they had an exhibition space that people could apply to use, so we thought we would see whether there was any further information about applying. Within the gallery however, there wasnt much to help us with this, however I have come across an email address on the website to email about sending a proposal; http://www.cornerhouse.org/art/ongoingproject.aspx?ID=1&page=42531
As much as this location would be perfect for the exhibition, as it is a well established exhibition space and would therefore attract alot of passing viewers. I feel that there would be little chance of being able to use the space in the time scale that we have until the deadline. I would love to apply to use this space in the future, but I feel that there just isnt enough time to do so for this particular project.
(This is Andy Warhole and it's take one, take one) It's, it's Warhol actually (What did I say) Whole, it's whole as in wholes (Andy Warhol) Wah, Andy War hol, Andy War hol (he) Like whole hub He Ha Are you ready (Yeah) Ha ha ha ha ha ha

This line from Bowie's song is how I feel about the shoot I am going to do and how I see the models.
This project by Ori Gersht, entitled "Rear Window; Vauxhall, London, 1997-99" is very interesting in my opinion. I feel that in some ways it is similar to my intended project as it focuses upon the sky. However, Gersht took all of his images from his window and therefore all images depict the same scene just with different sky conditions.
Much like how I would like to make my images, I like the simplicity of Gersht's images and their resemblance to abstract paintings with the colours being the most important aspect. Unlike these images however, I would not like to feature any of the buildings that are located in the area, and have it so the different patterns of light are the only hint as to the different cities shown.
Below are the most successful examples that I achieved during the shoot. The glow of the football ground is clearly visible, and I do feel that if it were not for this, the images would not be successful at all. Luckily the evening that I carried out this shoot was clear of cloud, as I feel that this makes the images that much better; hopefully the images I do of the other cities could also be done on a clear night like this one.
1. This first image is relatively successful, the glow from both the football ground and the rest of the city centre can be seen. However due to the slightly long shutter speed needed to pick up this light, the stars are somewhat blurred with a small trail left behind them. I feel that this is not a huge problem as it could be changed, and other than this, I feel the image is successful.
2. This next image was shot using a shorter shutter speed. Because of this only the glow of the stadium can truly be seen, I feel that the image could therefore be rather too dark.
3. I feel that this image has its Pro's and Con's; I feel that the colours are well represented, however there is a streak of light towards the top of the frame which was produced by a passing plane. I do not know whether it would be suitable of me to use this image because of the plane.
4. Much like the previous image, I like the light that has been captured within this image but there is the presence of another plane that has left a streak of light across the sky.
5. Much like the 2nd image, this image was taken using a faster shutter speed than the other images, however it was slightly longer than image 2, which has allowed more light to be collected. I do feel that this image is more successful that image 2.
Although Preston is a considerably smaller city than the likes of Manchester of Birmingham, I still feel that it is worth trying to photograph the glow that is generated by its lights. There were several options of where to photograph from, these included the area close to Winter Hill, as from that high vantage point you can look over Preston as well as Manchester as previously stated. However, due to Preston being smaller than Manchester, I felt that this option would be too far away from the city to do it justice, therefore I aimed to find a different location. I did have another location in mind, that being an area that I would pass through on the way in and out of Preston through Penwortham.
The map above shows the location that I have chosen to photograph from, from this raised viewpoint the centre of Preston can be seen clearly and I feel is an ideal place to photograph from.
Once I chose this location, I made a trip there to do a test shoot, but soon realised that it may not be suitable after all as there was not enough light being generated to create a successful image. However, I then realised that Preston North End were to be playing a football match during an evening, and due to this the floodlights of Deepdale would be on, and I knew from past experience that these produced a large glow that could be seen from a distance. Which this in mind, I chose to go back and photograph the scene again on that evening so to capture the glow from the football ground.
This video plays homage to the moving portrait and is a very touching video that compliments the song. The style of the moving portrait gives an intimate view of the subjects and I am keen to see how my film will look and how I, subjects and the viewers feel whilst watching.
Whilst photographing Manchester from the top of Winter Hill i quickly took this image; I know that it is not in the same visual style as those which i want to base my exhibition upon, but I do still quite like the image. I feel that it is good as it still shows the glow of the built up area but also has some other visual features included. Depending upon the other locations that I visit and any other interesting alternative images that I take, I may choose to include these along side the abstracts that will make up the main part of the exhibition.
As I said earlier in the blog, I had already done a test shoot at the location where I would document the glow of Manchester. Therefore there was no problem in revisiting the site and doing it again; below are a small number of the images that Ishot on my second visit to the location. I have chosen these particular images as they highlight the good and bad points of the shoot.
The image above shows how I have to resort to using an extended shutter speed to achieve my desired effect. when i have chosen my best image, and if it were to contain any ground within it i will crop it so that it is just sky within the frame. i have chosen to do this for 2 reasons, one is because it would be rather hard to capture the individual lights sharply and secondly because I like the abstract feel of having simply the colours of the sky.
I prefer the image above over the first image alot. once cropped i feel that it could be the best example from the Manchester shoot. I feel this because I like the inclusion of the slight cloud cover; this adds something more to the image but doesnt take away from the general intent of the idea.
The image above is more like that which I took for the test shoot last year, as it features a mostly clear sky. As much as this still works well, I do prefer the previous image; this is because it will make it stand out and be individual compared to the images of other cities as this is something I really dont want to happen; all the images looking the same.
Myself and two other third year photography students are wanting to hold an exhibition for a client brief, and I was informed by a former fashion student that they used an empty shop in the Miller Arcade in Preston last year for an exhibition. I was told that you were the person to contact regarding the possibility of using an empty unit. Could you please help us in anyway?
Many Thanks
Moira

Hi Moira,
The response to this is a bit complex, so I think the best thing that you can do is to call me on the number below. I will be out of the office tomorrow, but back in on Thursday.
I have posted this video showing Warhol's screen tests entitled "13 most beautiful people " as it is how I want my screen tests to be set up, though I will change the format by filming my screen tests in colour. I see no point in copying, if I am to learn anything from Warhol as an artist I will have to put my own spin on the film I make.
This is another potential option in Manchester. it is a new gallery situated in the Northern Quarter. When speaking to the man who runs it, he seemed interested in our proposition. We have an email address for him, and i am going to email him the full details of the project and take it from there.
I found out about this location last year when in my "photography and the city" module we had a guest speaker to told us about a project she was doing and tghis was where she exhibited it. with this in mind we chose to visit and see what it was like. the actual area that houses the exhibits is known as the "community gallery" and is open for anyone to use free of charge. potentially this is an ideal place in manchester to have our exhibition. we have an email address for them, so the next step would be to email and see whether the space is free around the time of our deadline.
Seeing as this project is aiming to help us gain new contacts and clients, i have thought that to get as many people as possible to come and see the exhibition, it could be a good idea to actually do two exhibitions rather than one. by having a second exhibition in Manchester it would allow people from that area to see the exhibition too. this is because i feel that there would be people interested in coming, but would not travel to Preston to see it, therefore by having 2 it would open it up to a much bigger audience. with this in mind, me and Lewis took a trip to manchester to scope out possible locations (moira couldnt come with us as she had plans).
Penny Martin is a must have contact for myself, as she is the editor in chief of the magazine The Gentle Woman. When I googled her name I was very pleased to find out that she was a lecturer at the London College of Fashion.
From finding these contact details I intend to send Penny Martin a letter and disc with my work from the exhibition on it, I shall ask for feedback. Once sent I will then follow up with an email a few days later.
"The Gentlewoman is a new biannual style magazine for a new decade. Featuring inspirational, international women, it pairs ambitious journalism with a sartorial and intelligent perspective on fashion that is focused on personal style – the way women actually look, think and dress".
my primary location thought for the preston area is its bus station, from here there is a clear view of the busy streets below. giving me lots of scope to manipulate and control the lines of focus to render the world below me into a miniture state.
This image clearly shows the vantage point that is the Preston bus station. there are so many angles and points of view of the streets below. which will give me time to experiment. but i allready have a specific image in my head. and this would be from (in regards to the image above) the top left of the top floor of the station, over looking the zebra crossing, which pedestrians use to cross the bus station forecourt to the street opposite. and from this location on the bus station i shall be able to literally have the camera pointing directly above this crossing for full emphasis on a shallow depth of field, which in turn shall create my desired miniture look.
unfortunately i could find a story for another location that i had in mind. but this map shows the general area. i have the idea of photographing from the multi story car park that is situated next to Prestons train station, this will give me a great view of some of the the Fishergate shopping center. and this location is normally bussling with people and various cars driving around. this may not be on the same scale as the potential locations in Manchester, but that doesnt matter. as no matter where i photograph i shall be able to create my desired aesthetic.
Andy Warhol has had not only a huge influence on me as a photographer, but also on the popular culture we live in the everyday. His outlook on society and what we will become has been very accurate. From his obsession with celebrity to the films he made. If we look at the magazines on the newsagent shelves and the reality shows that we get engrossed in, surely we can see what warhol was trying to depict through his work. The images below are example of Warhols work and image of the man himself . The images above are of Edie Segwick and were photographed by Warhol. The photobooth style of photography is an idea I want to incorporate into my exhibition. I would like to photograph models and then design (digitally) a photobooth layout.
(above) Warhol photobooth self portraits. I find this interesting as he gives nothing away about who he is. By wearing the sunglasses in the photobooth he is disguising himself.
This still is from Edie Sedgwicks screen test. I hope to find a subject that emmulates charisma in the film I intend to make.
Warhol's Mona Lisa Diptych
Warhol's screen prints represented icons, fame and the way he structured and produced his work depicted the mass production world we now live in. I am inspired by how Warhol appropriated others work and products and used them, I feel that my work is always influenced by other artists and I then add my own twist. That why I feel it is interesting for me to appropriate Warhol as it is slightly ironic .
As part of my exhibition I really want to attempt to create moving portraits like Warhols screen tests. Here is an image that shows some stills of the screen tests that Warhol made. Warhol made over a thousand screen tests in his lifetime as an artist. This is something I want to take on board as I feel that myself as a photographer I wish to have many dimensions to my work. I believe in being creative and so therefore this type of production will be something I can develop and change. I see this kind of production as an experiment and that the subject/s will help me fail and succeed in where I wish to go as a photographic artist. To produce this format of work I have recruited a film student to assist me, this is for technical reasons, though I still want the look of the film to be influenced by my vision.
